Fredric J. Holub

Fredric J. Holub

Fredric J. Holub passed away peacefully at home in San Francisco on October 1, 2022, after a long illness. He was 77 years old. Fred is interred at the San Francisco Columbarium.

Fred is survived by his husband Geoffrey McNally; son Jonathan Holub, daughter-in-law Tamara and grandson Kevin of West Hills, California; son Ari Holub of Los Angeles; brother Paul Holub and sister-in-law Janice of Suwanee, Georgia; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Fred grew up in Newark, NJ, where he attended Weequahic High School. He graduated from the New Jersey Institute of Technology with a degree in Industrial Engineering. He had a distinguished career as a quality control manager at Johnson & Johnson. Following his retirement, he earned a Masters in Counseling from Rider University. Fred moved from Hopewell, NJ, to New York City in 1999 and then to San Francisco in 2005.

Fred was a friend to all. He was easy going, level headed and a great listener. He had exceptional artistic talent which was apparent in his pottery and the greeting cards he created. Over the years, Fred volunteered at The Lighthouse, Project Open Hand, Gay Men’s Health Crisis, SAGE and other organizations. He will be missed by his many friends in San Francisco, New York, New Jersey and other areas.

Fred first gave to Project Open Hand in 2006, soon after moving to San Francisco. He continued his incredible support until his passing, at which time he joined our Legacy Society with a final gift to Project Open Hand through a revocable trust. We are so humbled that Fred considered us in his final affairs and are honored to include him here in remembrance and appreciation.

“Fred always wanted to live in San Francisco and was so happy when we finally moved here from the East Coast,” McNally said. “He was a big believer in giving back to the community and was especially committed to Project Open Hand. Every Monday morning for almost 13 years he worked in the kitchen with the same group of volunteers. It gave him a lot of satisfaction to be part of a larger effort to feed fellow San Franciscans in need.”
