Andrew (Drew) Marshall III

Andrew MarshallAndrew (Drew) Marshall III dedicated his life in service of others and believed deeply in the mission of Project Open Hand, for which we remain incredibly grateful. Born in Cambridge and raised in Colorado Springs, Drew moved to Boston after graduating from Marlboro College in 1962 and completing his military service, and he began his career in real estate. A natural athlete his entire life, Drew also began sailing his father’s Concordia yawl off the New England and teaching skiing, passions that he brought with him to San Francisco, where he relocated in the mid-1970s.

Drew made his first gift to Project Open Hand in 1989 and was a lifelong supporter of serving Meals with Love thereafter. He was incredibly generous through his philanthropy and supporting Food as Medicine at the height of the AIDS pandemic, helping friends and neighbors most in need of life-saving nutrition. In addition to Project Open Hand, Drew donated immeasurable time and support to the San Francisco Model Yacht Club, for which the SFMYC proudly named the workshop in honor of Drew and his many other contributions.

Project Open Hand is honored to host Drew in our Legacy Society for his incredible generosity in support of our mission. Drew’s friends and family described him as an inventive problem solver who would fix anything, a lover of cool gadgets, and a meticulous organizer, someone who was always fighting for justice and making things right and wouldn’t back down until the right things got done. Drew was compassionate and caring to friends and strangers alike, being there for many of his dying friends when their families abandoned them during the AIDS crisis. We at Project Open Hand will never forget Drew’s love and dedication to providing Food as Medicine.

We are incredible humbled by Drew’s gift and excited to carry his legacy forward as part of our own. If you would like to learn more about our legacy giving options, please reach out to Barbara Camacho at (415) 477-2419 or bcamacho@openhand.org.
